Alcatraz E.R. is definitely one of the many unique places to visit in Tokyo, Japan. It is a combination of prison and hospital themed restaurant, a very well thought concept I must say. Their interior and decorations are all out, very detail, with prison cells as rooms and lots of skulls and corpses lying under glass walkways. Not to forget, their sexily dressed nurses as waitresses. All of these details are, for me, worth the Y500 entrance fee. Plus, at some time during the night they have ‘surprise performances’ which was both fun and thrilling! (hint: it’s not gonna be sexy, it’s more like horror!).
How to go to Alcatraz E.R.
Alcatraz E.R. is located in Shibuya, Tokyo. I know you know Shibuya is huge with all those blocks and shophouses, but to be honest I really can’t give a clear direction to the restaurant. It was raining that night but we went there with a bunch of friends who are living in Japan and had previously went to the restaurant, so we were kind of walking behind them and let them lead the way. All I know is that it took us about 10 minutes walking back from the place to Shibuya Station.
To better understand where the place is, I really suggest you to get direction from Google Maps. However, the place is at Harvest Building, 2nd floor. The entrance of the building has lots of vending machine. Find a small escalator and go up to the second floor. Once you arrived at the restaurant, believe me, you might think twice to whether go inside the restaurant or hurry go back down the escalator! Choose wisely, it’s that scary!

What to do at Alcatraz E.R.
We went there in a small group of 6 people, so we chose to sit on the floor in a cell. Expect a very intimate small space just like those cells we seen in movies. If you prefer not to sit on the floor, there are also a few rooms with chairs.
What else to do besides sitting intimately on the floor? Get the waitresses’ attention! All of the waiter & waitresses were friendly and they were more than happy to pose for us.
They also have a staged prison breakout ‘performance’ where suddenly the lights went off and alarm ringing. As expected, people were screaming out loud only to find ‘someone’ sneaking into every cells! If you want to experience this, make sure you are there at 10pm.
What to order at Alcatraz E.R.
Expect some ‘adult’ menu, please. Although they have some ‘normal’ menu like fries and fried chicken, I recommend you to take the ‘challenging’ menu like the Russian Roulette Takoyaki where there were 6 piece of takoyaki to share between your groups but one of them got Wasabi filling inside. Quite challenging, right?
The beverages list has some unique names like “Peach Boobs” or “Brainshock”. The presentation of the drinks matches the drink name, which is interesting and surprising. Our friend Banu ordered a Peach Boobs and it came in a baby bottle and the ‘nurse’ had to feed him like a baby
Overall a really unique experience we had that night. I’d recommend people (adult!) to come to this medical prison restaurant. Please please come in a group!
