Munnar is a small town in Kerala, India, located in the Idukki district. Situated at around 1,600 metres above sea level, Munnar is known for its charming quaint cottages and tea gardens. I personally think that most visitors come to Munnar to enjoy the refreshing green view and the sweet loving people there.
How to go to Munnar
I went to Munnar during my #CometoKerala trip with the Kerala Tourism Department. It was quiet a long drive from Thekkady (also in Kerala), but the large tea plantation along the journey was breathtaking, making us stop here and there to take pictures 😀
Anyway, to reach Munnar, you have to fly to Kerala first. The nearest airport is in Kochi, Cochin International Airport. From there, I think you can either drive down to Munnar or take a bus.
Where to stay in Munnar
I didn’t see any other hotel there except Tea County, which was already set in a perfect location, nestled right in the middle of two hills. It’s a little bit old fashioned, but that’s the beauty of Kerala anyway. Judging from the mesmerizing views behind windows of every rooms, Tea County is your only best choice to enjoy Munnar, whether you’re there alone or with your family.
What to do in Munnar
From my quick research, I found that there are plenty of things to do in Munnar. Those who likes adventure can go out walking or bicycle down the trails, go trekking, or even paraglide over the valleys. Munnar also have a wildlife sanctuary, and there are opportunities to see wild animals there. But then again if you are not keen on those activities, you can always go down to the market (like I did) and shop for spices or tea produce. I also did a walk up to the hill to just see where the people live and all. People in Munnar are extremely polite and kind, photographers will be struck in love!
Oh and if you don’t feel like walking up and down the hills, you can always take Tuktuk. It’s not expensive and the driver can speak English! 😀
